Hohner HW03

I inspected and played several 3/4 size guitars and this one has a warm and loud sound superior to many others. The adjustable saddle is a nice feature. The neck seems less quality as the dots are painted on and not inlaid. The box has a handle on it which makes it handy to carry if you don't plan on a soft case right away. I'm also partial to the Hohner because my first guitar was a Hohner 30 yrs. ago. This guitar is a great value for kids starting (age 7 or so), or as a travel/backpacker!

My new little Hohner sounds better than my $3,000 Martin. OK ... so I don't own a Martin. But this is still a neat little guitar. I do own a Yamaha FG730S. I wanted something to keep in my office and learn a little finger-style. This more than fits the bill. A nice sound that I made better. It has a little more string space than the FG730S. Mine came with a traditional bridge and bridge pins. At first I thought the bridge was plastic. But it is not. I rigged up a bone saddle, put in some ebony bridge pins, and strung er up with some John Pearse 200L's. This is great little guitar. If you are considering this guitar there is a guy on Youtube playing a blues piece on his HW03. check it out. He is a good player and his little Hohner sounds great.

This is a great little guitar for the beginner guitarist. I wanted something for my kids to start learning on and play with me so I bought two of these from a local store. The scale was just right for my 5 and 6 year old. They are able to fret the strings with no problem and have already learned G,C and D. What else do they need? We have been playing these non-stop since they arrived. The finish was good and the tuners are stable. My daughter did want a pink guitar but everyone that I found didn't have the playability that these do. So she is going to customize it herself.... with daddy's help of course. This is by far the best value for any 3/4 size guitar if you actually want your kids to learn. I'm going to pick up one more for my nephew!

Bought this for my 9-year old to use with school lessons and it has been a great choice so far. The finish was superb and the feel of the guitar is good. A few small blemishes on the fret board but he doesn't mind. It only has a single button to attach a strap on the bottom; a second would have been nice, but we simply tied the strap behind the strings above the nut. We did replace the strings to some lighter weight Gibsons and the tone is much better, plus it's easier...

This guitar was definatly worth the money. I was looking for a acoustic that I could take places and was portable. It worked great for that and more. It has a great feel and plays excellent. It has alot of classical guitar features. Overall excellent guitar.

Great guitar for a schoolkid just learning to play. While it's a great starter guitar, it's not a toy -- it has a very nice sound.

Hohner HW03

I picked this instrument up for my then seven-year-old son, who was starting to show an interest in guitar and who didn't have the finger strength or hand size to play a full-sized acoustic easily. After doing some product research, this guitar seemed a decent value and I purchased it "unplayed" from Amazon, something I've never done with a musical instrument before.

Overall, I'm satisfied with the purchase and my son loves it. For the price, it seems a good value. If I wanted to be picky, I'd say that the sound is a little variable, with more volume in a relatively narrow band of the midrange than I'm used to, and the tone is slightly tinny (possibly a product of the stock strings I have on it). The body cavity, being a 3/4-sized guitar, lends the lower notes a "punchy" character that muddles six-string chords slightly (an effect particularly seen when I drop into DADGAD or other alternative tunings).

Still, for what it is, it's a good deal. It's a genuine musical instrument and not a toy, though a dedicated child will probably want to upgrade to something better after a year or two of lessons. It holds a tune fairly well as well, something that is a boon for young people starting out and who may need help with tuning.

Hohner HW03

I just wanted to get a little guitar to keep in my office. On a hunch I found a 1/4 inch bone saddle blank, removed the adjustable saddle from the Hohner, and fit the saddle blank to the Hohner (not using the adjustable saddle). Wow! What an amazing difference it made! It turned a good little guitar into a great little guitar. It sounds very well and much larger than it is. Even though it is not a solid top instrument, Hohner did put good quality woods into it and it is built solidly. I have well less than $100 in this little guitar (guitar and saddle) and I could not be happier. I also own a Yamaha FG 730S, which I love, and I keep gravitating toward my dynamic little Hohner! Further, I have owned the Jasmine by Takamine S35 and I consider the Hohner, with the bone saddle, to be the better value.

I bought this as my first guitar and I couldn't be more satisfied. Well balanced quality and price. Sounds great, it's beautiful and can be easily carried. Recommended

This is essentially a parlor size guitar, which is bigger than a 3/4th but still very comfortable to hold and play. It's an adult guitar that a child could easily learn on, thought the neck is wide and chunky like a regular guitar. The tuners stay in tune well enough, give it a week or so to settle after receiving the guitar or changing strings. It has a high gloss lacquer finish, and the bridge height is adjustable using two built-in screws. This lets you raise or lower the action to your liking, but make sure you loosen the strings before you try this. The build quality is perfectly fine in an instrument at this price point. Over time I've noticed some wear on the paint where the neck meets the fretboard, but it's nothing anyone would notice and doesn't affect playability.

It's a smaller guitar, so it's never going to be as loud as a dreadnought. But it's size means that you don't get "boomy" bass notes but instead an even balance of frequencies from low to high. This makes the guitar excellent for blues or fingerstyle playing. Blues is an interesting genre in that the shallow, raspy sound can often be captured better by a cheap laminate guitar. What I've done with it is let the strings deaden and it's given the guitar a lovely muted, woody sound that makes singer/songwriter tunes (a la Nick Drake) sound wonderful. If I put new strings on it the guitar would be livened up, better for blues I suppose. But it would lose that warm, earthy tone that I just can't get enough of. I've played an all wood Larrivee parlor next to this guitar and I really do prefer the Hohner. Sometimes a cheap guitar can surprise you.

I just did an A/B comparison with this Hohner and an Art and Lutherie Cedar Ami, which has a solid cedar top and sells for 3-4 times the price. It sounded thin, boxy, and lacked projection compared to the Hohner. Both guitars are used so they've each had a chance to open up. One reason I think is the Art and Lutherie is a more heavily built guitar, with a noticeably thicker top. Even though it's solid, a thicker top doesn't let the wood vibrate as easily so the guitar doesn't project as well. Overall I was disappointed with the Art and Lutherie and thoroughly impressed with my Hohner. I'm hanging onto this guy for a while.
